PIEZOELECTRIC SURGERY: FROM OPPORTUNITY TO STANDARD PRACTICE

Ultrasonic oral surgery represents one of the most significant technological revolutions of recent decades. It allows for selective, micrometric osteotomies on mineralized tissues while preserving soft tissues and enhancing safety in delicate anatomical areas. Although the piezoelectric principle has been known for some time, its surgical application became widespread around the 2000s, enabling high surgical precision with minimal tissue trauma and reduced intraoperative bleeding.

The cavitation effect improves visibility within the surgical field and contributes to smoother post-operative recovery. Advances in equipment have further expanded the technique’s capabilities, making it increasingly common in clinical practice. Today, its use extends beyond oral surgery to include specialties such as maxillofacial surgery, ENT, orthopedics, and neurosurgery.
